Tens of thousands were in the dark shortly before 8:30 p.m.
Orange and Rockland Utilities posted on their web site, that the cause of the power outage is attributed to a transmission equipment failure at the Shoemaker substation in Middletown, causing approximately 52,000 outages.
State police at the Troop F headquarters in the Town of Wallkill were indundated with reports of people without power. Many traffic signals were reported out, and heightened concerns. State police were increasing their manpower in the area to handle outage-related problems, one trooper said.
