NEW YORK – Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution, only to struggle with following through?

Perhaps it was about getting back to the gym, and you invested in a membership—some of which can cost a lot each month!

Starting Saturday, a new law in New York will help residents save money when trying to cancel their gym memberships. Under this new legislation, health clubs will be required to accept the cancellation of a membership within 10 business days of receiving notice of the cancellation.

The bill, proposed by State Senator Roxanne Persaud and Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz, was signed into law in November. Both lawmakers praised the bill, with Dinowitz stating, “This legislation concerns fairness, accessibility, and bringing cancellation options into the 21st century.”

Despite support from consumer advocates, gyms have expressed concerns, arguing that the new law could negatively impact the industry. However, the law aligns with a similar rule proposed by the Federal Trade Commission. In October, the FTC introduced its “click-to-cancel” legislation, which aims to make it as easy to cancel services as it is to sign up for them.

This change comes as part of the Governor’s ‘Money in Your Pockets’ initiative, a broader effort to protect consumers and simplify the cancellation process for various services.
