JERUSALEM — On Sunday, an elderly couple in Jerusalem was brutally hit by a police water cannon. The couple did nothing wrong, they were innocent bystanders standing in proximity of an extremist protest.

Disturbing footage showing the couple being thrown to the ground by a police riot-dispersal water cannon was posted on Twitter.

The couple is seen on the side of the road, at a substantial distance from where the Jerusalem Faction was protesting the arrest of a yeshiva student before Rosh Hashanah.

The cannon began spraying the couple who was standing on the side of the road. The force of the stream caused the elderly man and woman to fall forcefully to the ground and were injured.

Israel Police released a statement concerning the incident: “From the footage, it would appear that the use of the water cannon, in this case, calls for an in-depth investigation. The case will be reviewed and dealt with appropriately, and the procedure for the use of water cannons will be refined.

In response to the incident, MK Mossi Raz from the Meretz Party, which has been outspoken against police violence, called for an end to the practice.

“Shocking violence by police officers, there is no justification for such use of a water cannon. I demand that the Public Security Committee be convened to put an end to the violent use of a water cannon,” Raz wrote on his Twitter account.
