JERUSALEM — In retaliation for the elimination of the northern sector of Gaza’s Islamic Jihad commander, Thaysir Al-Ja’abri, as well as 15 terror operatives, the terrorist organization unleashed a huge barrage of rockets against Israel during the course of Friday night and Shabbos.
From 9 PM Friday night, the Islamic Jihad fired rockets towards the Western Negev, southern cities and even towards Tel Aviv. The fire continued during the course of the day. In all, some 350 rockets were fired during,94 were fired at the Western Negev, 29 fell in the sea and Iron Dome intercepted 160 others with a 96% success rate. One round of rockets slammed into a house in Sderot but the family had succeeded in escaping to a safe room.
The IDF continued the Alot Hashachar (Dawn) campaign, hitting different locations and terror facilities of Islamic Jihad in the Gaza strip. Hamas has not condemned the targeting of Islamic Jihad, and responded by stating that there were various channels attempting to diffuse the situation.
As of 4 PM the rocket fire was renewed on Sderot, Ashkelon and Netivot. The IDF attacked targets in various places including a five-story house which was hit by IDF fire.
After Shabbat more rockets were fired at Ashdod and Ashkelon and a rocket hit a factory in Sderot. There were no known casualties in these incidents. Palestinians reported 6 dead in an attack on Jabalia, including some children but the IDF stressed that it had not attacked there and that the children were killed by a stray Palestinian rocket. IDF spokesman shows faulty rocket falling on Jabalya which reportedly killed 9 Palestinians including children
The IDF also attacked in southern Gaza and a senior Islamic Jihad commander,Khaled Mansour, has reportedly been eliminated in this attack.
The Palestinians report 24 killed and 203 wounded since the beginning of the campaign.
On the Israeli side, two people have been lightly injured by shrapnel, 13 people were lightly hurt while running to safety shelters and 6 people suffered from panic attacks.
The Israeli security cabinet was due to meet on Motzaei Shabbos to discuss the escalation in Gaza.
