At least 45 new cases confirmed in northern town of Binyamina and officials fear fast spreading Delta variant may be found; passengers excused from obligatory testing at airport due to overcrowding

The Health Ministry said on Sunday that a mask requirement would be reinstated for students and faculty in some schools following an outbreak of coronavirus detected in two cities.

The ministry said late on Saturday, that at least 45 new cases were detected in the northern town of Binyamina, attributed to one family that had recently returned to Israel. At least nine students already developed mild symptoms.

Resident of Binyamina were urged to get tested for the virus to prevent further spread.

After an outbreak was detected in the city of Modi’in late last week, also in a local school, officials Mayor Haim Bibas said some families, were violating their coronavirus quarantine imposed on them upon their arrival from travel abroad.

On Friday, passengers arriving at the Ben Gurion International Airport left without being tested, as required by law for all recent arrivals.

Long lines were blamed on the mishap caused by numerous flights arriving at the same time prompting the concern of some passengers that they would not be able to get home before the Sabbath.

The ministry claimed they excused only people who arrived from countries with low contagion rates and that the long lines of people waiting to get tested were also a source of worry because of overcrowding.

Officials added that there will be an increase in manpower to operating the testing sites at the airport to prevent delays.
