Queens, NY – A 3-week-old baby is recovering from smoke inhalation after an FDNY lieutenant rescued him from the attic of a burning house in Queens.

The Daily News reports that the fire started at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in a two-story house in Corona.
Lt. Adam Vilagos says the parents were outside yelling “There’s a baby in the attic!” when firefighters arrived.

The 18-year FDNY veteran ran to the smoky attic and scooped the child up from his crib.

“It was lights out. You couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. My main concern was getting in there, doing a search, trying to find those stairs and getting to the baby before it was too late. I couldn’t imagine if that was my kid. That feeling must have been horrible.”, said Lieutenant Vilagos.

The baby, identified by family as Sunjay Headley Jr., was placed on an oxygen machine and rushed to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Fire Department officials say he’s expected to survive.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
