Soldiers, who suffered burns to 70-80 percent of their bodies, fighting for their lives; IDF still investigating causes of fire.

Two IDF soldiers were fighting for their lives after they were seriously injured in a fire that broke out in the early evening hours of Sunday at the Ramon Air Force base in southern Israel.

IAF helicopters airlifted the two soldiers to the Sheba Medical Center in Tel HaShomer. The hospital said there is concern for the lives of the two soldiers, who suffered burns to 70-80 percent of their bodies.

The base’s firefighters put out the fire in minutes but extensive damage was caused to facilities at the base.

The IDF was investigating the cause of the fire, when one of the lines of inquiry is that the fire broke out as a result of the immolation of flammable liquid.

Prof. Yossi Hayek, director of the Sheba Burn Unit, said the soldiers “were burned by flammable material, and are suffering burns on 70-80 percent of their bodies. They are also suffering from smoke inhalation.

“The ER and trauma teams are giving them the same treatment as those suffering from multi-systemic injuries, and they are currently undergoing fluid resuscitation. Their lives are in danger.”
