Couple found stabbed in an apartment; woman dies of her wounds in hospital
A woman died Sunday at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa shortly after she was found in critical condition alongside her husband, who was seriously injured in what police suspect was an attempted murder-suicide.
The couple was found at an apartment in the city on Sunday morning.
Paramedics were alerted to the scene at El-Mutanabi Street at 9:15 a.m., and discovered two people with stab wounds: the woman, 51, in critical condition and the man, 54, in serious condition, both of them unconscious.
The two were taken to the city’s Rambam Medical Center while first responders performed CPR on the woman, according to a statement by Magen David Adom.
The woman succumbed to her wounds at the hospital.
Police have opened an investigation.
A neighbor of the couple said they were meant to be marking their daughter’s engagement the following day. “I’m really in shock, tomorrow was supposed to be their daughter’s engagement party. They are an upstanding family. We heard about a dispute between them as part of their divorce, but I never believed it would get to this point,” the neighbor told the Ynet news site.
According to a report published by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in January, there were 16 cases of women murdered in Israel by a relative or a partner throughout 2021, and 21 cases in 2020.
More recent cases include a woman in her 50s who was found dead in Ashdod last month, with her ex-husband, 54, arrested as the prime suspect; a 62-year-old woman who was stabbed to death in the northern city of Kiryat Ata earlier in May with her son arrested as the prime suspect; and a 30-year-old man from Lod who in April confessed to killing his 60-year-old mother.
In March, police arrested a man after he allegedly tried to kill his wife by electrocuting her with jumper cables. She woke up feeling the metal clamps on her neck and called the police after managing to escape the house.
