Al-Hayat Al-Jadida also inaccurately says Khalil Jabarin was shot by Israeli soldiers, while he was in fact shot by the fatally wounded Fuld and a 2nd civilian
Reporting on the terror attack Sunday in which a Palestinian teenager stabbed Israeli Ari Fuld to death, the Palestinian Authority’s daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida on Monday highlighted the shooting and arrest of a “child” in connection with what it said was “the claim he killed a settler.”
On Sunday, 17-year-old Khalil Jabarin of Yatta, a village south of Hebron, fatally stabbed 45-year-old Ari Fuld, an American Israeli resident of the Efrat settlement and a father of four, outside a shopping mall at the Gush Etzion Junction.
Al-Hayat Al-Jadida headlined its article on the terror attack: “Child Khalil Jabarin is wounded by gunfire and arrested based on the claim he killed a settler near ‘Etzion.’”
In an attack that was caught on security cameras, Jabarin stabbed Fuld in the back, on the sidewalk outside the shopping mall, shortly before noon on Sunday.
Despite sustaining fatal wounds, Fuld chased and shot Jabarin — preventing Jabarin from continuing the attack — before collapsing to the ground.
Fuld was rushed to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center in serious condition. After resuscitation efforts failed, doctors there pronounced him dead.
Jabarin was taken to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus in moderate condition with multiple gunshot wounds, hospital officials said.
His condition was reported on Monday to be lightly injured.
“It should be noted that the child Jabarin was injured by several Israel soldiers’ bullets near the ‘Etzion’ Junction after he stabbed a settler, according to the Israeli occupation’s narrative,” the Al-Hayat Al-Jadida article said.
In fact, Jabarin was shot by Fuld and another armed civilian.
On Sunday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas, reacting to the terror attack. said he opposes violence.
Abbas made the remarks during a meeting with former Israeli politicians, including Ophir Pinez-Paz, Efi Oshaya, Yair Tzaban, Yosef Vanunu and others at the PA presidential headquarters in Ramallah on Sunday evening, according to former justice minister Yossi Beilin, who was also at the meeting.
Beilin said Abbas appeared “visibly angry about the attack” and commented about his opposition to violence of his own volition at the outset of the meeting with the former Israeli lawmakers.
“He said he’s against violence and while he supports an opposition to Israeli policies, he only supports a peaceful and non-violent one,” Beilin told the Times of Israel Sunday evening. “He said everyone loses from violence,” he added.
The official PA news site Wafa also reported that Abbas told his Israeli guests that he supports non-violence.
“The president of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas affirmed the Palestinian side’s commitment to achieving peace and popular, peaceful resistance because killing, settlement building, destroying and uprooting people will not achieve peace and security for any party in the region,” the Wafa report stated.
However, the Wafa report did not specifically state that Abbas’s comment about “popular, peaceful resistance” was in response to the fatal stabbing of Fuld.
Senior Hamas official Husam Badran praised the stabbing, calling it “heroic.”
“Our Palestinian people today received the news of the heroic attack that the revolutionary Khalil Jabarin carried out in the ‘Gush Etsion’ settlement, south of Jerusalem,” Badran said in a statement.
Islamic Jihad also praised the attack in a statement and described it “a natural response to the aggression and crimes that the Zionist terror perpetrates at the expense of the Palestinian people, land and holy sites,” according to the Islamic Jihad-linked Palestine Today.
