White House Spokesman Josh Earnest issued a public statement that US policy on Iran has not changed, in response to the report that President Obama sent a secret letter to Iranian leader Ayatollah Khameini. The correspondence discussed the signing of an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program by its November 24 deadline, as well as a strategy against the “Islamic State” (ISIS).
President Obama did not consult his allies in the Middle East, including Israel, before sending the letter.
John Boehner, Speaker of the House, said he did not trust Iran and did not think the US should include its leaders in the fight against ISIS.
