JERUSALEM — A 5-month-old baby died Sunday after losing consciousness while in the care of a babysitter in Jerusalem, authorities said.

Emergency responders from United Hatzalah performed CPR on the infant at an apartment in the Katamon neighborhood before transporting her to a hospital in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.

Medics at the scene said they carried out prolonged resuscitation efforts and continued CPR during transport. Crisis response volunteers were also dispatched to assist those present.

Israel Police said officers opened an investigation after receiving a report about the infant, who had been staying with a caregiver at the time. Investigators are gathering evidence and taking testimony from the babysitter to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

The case marks the third reported incident in recent months in which an infant has died after losing consciousness while in a caregiver’s supervision in Israel. Authorities have not indicated whether the cases are connected.

The investigation is ongoing.
