NEW YORK – The NY Times is reporting that, Danielle R. Sassoon, the acting U.S. attorney for Manhattan, resigned after being ordered by the Justice Department to drop a corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Sassoon, a veteran prosecutor, had been leading the case, which involved charges of bribery, fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. Adams had pleaded not guilty, with a trial scheduled for April.
The dismissal order, issued weeks into President Trump’s second term, raised concerns about the independence of federal prosecutors under his administration. The Justice Department’s decision, which also halted further investigative steps, prompted questions regarding political influence over ongoing investigations. The case will undergo a review by Trump’s appointee, Jay Clayton, once confirmed by the Senate.
