Opinion: In Israel’s worst economic crisis, with one million unemployed, this gluttonous regime has never seemed so brazen, as Netanyahu demands more from state coffers and the man who so prided himself on his values does nothing
So many desperate voices have been heard in Israel over the last few months, and those who lost their livelihood turned their eyes on their leaders and awaited salvation.
They had heard so many promises, coped with so much anxiety, and so many times looked into their children’s eyes and said: “Not now, maybe later.”
How many times have Israelis woken up in the morning and tried to stiffen their spines, only to end up shamed in the face of endless insult?
This is not the lot of a handful of people, it is the fate of many who suffered a devastating economic blow from coronavirus and were then made to suffer the most devastating blow of all – the knowledge that no one cares.
Their lives are falling apart and their leader – perched on his hoard of gold – keeps demanding more for himself.
It seems that this gluttonous regime has never been so brazen. Israel is neck deep in its worst economical crisis ever; hundreds of thousands have lost their jobs due to the coronavirus outbreak and businesses are closing one after another.
And the country’s leaders are not even trying to pretend to care. They are too busy spitting on us from a great height, perhaps from atop Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s luxurious Caesarea villa.
In the last few weeks, there has been a feverish search for spokespeople from Benny Gantz’s Blue & White party. The party’s drastic decline in polls, it has been said behind closed doors, requires an organized publicity campaign.
I honestly do not know how to say this any clearer: A hundred skilled publicists would not be enough to smooth over the disgusting absence of Blue & White MKs from the Finance Committee vote on whether to give Netanyahu even more money.
That is without mentioning the monstrously bloated government, the luxury cars, the convoys and the alternate official residence for the alternate prime minister.
I believe Gantz when he says these weren’t on his list of demands during the coalition negotiations. Yet those negotiations were taking place when everybody already knew the severity of the looming economic crisis.
And his hand certainly didn’t tremble as he signed that abomination of a coalition agreement, and no declarations that he is relinquishing those benefits can help mitigate the well-deserved contempt he is facing today.
And while Gantz’ actions mean ministries such as Communications, Culture and Justice are being run in a considerably saner manner today, it is he, who constantly talked about values and morals and Israel above all else, who is repeatedly kicking those who are down.
He did it when he gave authority to the continued rule of a thrice-indicted man, and again now, when there are almost a million people unemployed in Israel.
Failing to fight for Israelis and to be absent from voting on Netanyahu’s retroactive tax benefits is both immoral and without value.
