The British charity The Together Plan is trying to preserve headstones that came from a massive Jewish cemetery in Belgium dating back to 1832.
Excavators uncovered hundreds during the construction of a supermarket in the city of Brest, Belgium.
The Nazis killed every Jew in Brest, except for 19, according to Debra Brunner, the director of the Together Plan. The death toll for the city was 30,000 Jews.
Some Brest residents found the headstones and took them to a local priest. He said they were “’sacred objects’” and told the citizens to preserve them.
Now, The Together Plan wants to create a memorial at the site of the cemetery.
