Santiago del Estero, Argentina – Members of Argentina’s Jewish community are denouncing the desecration of about a dozen tombs at a Jewish cemetery in the South American country.
The president of the delegation of Israeli Argentine associations in the city of Santiago del Estero said Monday that the damage on the tombs was not just an act of vandalism. Hernan Kriscautzky calls it an act of “unprecedented scorn.”
Stones were broken, monuments uprooted and photos scattered over the weekend at a cemetery in the city of Santiago del Estero, some 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) northeast of the Argentine capital. Police say they are investigating.
Argentina has Latin America’s largest Jewish community, and other Jewish cemeteries have been vandalized in the country in the past.
